The Federal Government is working on a new transportation programme that could lower commuting costs for Nigerians from October 1, 2026.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the target after meeting with the governors of the 36 states.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
Government targets cheaper transport
Tinubu said he met the governors on August 27 to discuss measures aimed at reducing transportation costs.
According to the President, the meeting produced a clear objective.
From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in the amount they spend on transportation.
The plan is being pursued through the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas Transit Programme.
Governors to coordinate implementation
An implementation committee has been established under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is the chairman of the committee.
Tinubu said the committee is working with state governments and other stakeholders to move the programme forward.
The work includes identifying priority transport corridors across the country.
Officials are also assessing the type of support required on each route.
CNG and electric vehicles included
The programme will involve compressed natural gas and electric vehicle initiatives.
The government hopes that the use of alternative energy sources can help address transportation costs.
Tinubu said the programme has become more urgent because of the current global energy crisis.
He added that the relevant agencies and stakeholders were already working on the necessary arrangements.
Impact will depend on implementation
The planned reduction in transport costs will not necessarily be the same across all parts of Nigeria.
Different states and transport corridors may require different interventions.
The implementation committee will therefore play a key role in determining where the programme is introduced and how it operates.
The Federal Government’s stated goal is to ensure that more commuters begin to benefit from lower transportation costs from October.
