Why Chelsea Keep Signing Manchester City Academy Graduates

Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy has revealed a clear pattern: the club continues to recruit players who came through Manchester City’s academy. From Cole Palmer and Roméo Lavia to Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, Tosin Adarabioyo, and most recently Morgan Rogers, Stamford Bridge has become home to a growing number of former City prospects.

The trend is far from accidental. One of the key figures behind Chelsea’s recruitment policy is Joe Shields, the club’s co-director of recruitment, who previously held senior academy recruitment roles at Manchester City. His familiarity with City’s youth system and its standout talents has helped shape Chelsea’s transfer strategy.

Manchester City’s academy is widely regarded as one of the finest in Europe, producing technically gifted players capable of thriving in possession-based football. However, breaking into City’s first team remains exceptionally difficult because of the club’s wealth of established international stars. As a result, many promising youngsters seek opportunities elsewhere to secure regular first-team football.

Chelsea see these players as footballers who have already received elite coaching and tactical education but still possess significant room for development. The club believes they can flourish with greater opportunities while fitting into its long-term project centred on young talent.

Financial considerations also play a role. Under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules, clubs carefully balance spending with player sales. Chelsea have continued to invest in young players with high potential, believing they can either become first-team stars or retain strong resale value in the future.

The strategy has already produced notable success, particularly with Cole Palmer, who has become one of Chelsea’s standout performers since leaving Manchester City. The club hopes newer arrivals can follow a similar path and help return the Blues to the top of English and European football.

As Chelsea continue reshaping their squad, their growing reliance on former Manchester City academy graduates reflects a broader strategy of identifying proven young talent, investing in long-term development, and building a team capable of competing for major honours.
