Ugandan football has been thrown into mourning following the death of David Owori, who died after a suspected robbery attack near his home in the country’s capital, Kampala.
Owori, 27, reportedly sustained critical injuries after resisting an attempt by suspected robbers to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings. He was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries.
Ugandan police have launched an investigation into the incident and said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Owori was widely regarded as one of Uganda’s finest footballers. He captained SC Villa, one of the country’s most successful clubs, and also represented the Uganda national team during his career.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief from teammates, football administrators, supporters and public officials across the country.
In a tribute, SC Villa described the late defender as “a leader, a brother and a friend,” while the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) praised his contributions to Ugandan football, both on and off the pitch.
Owori rejoined SC Villa in 2023 and played a pivotal role in helping the club win the 2024 Uganda Premier League title, ending a two-decade wait for the championship.
His impressive performances earned him a contract extension that was expected to keep him at the club until 2027.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns over rising violent crime in Kampala, with many Ugandans calling for stronger security measures to tackle robberies and other criminal attacks.
Owori’s death comes only weeks after the killing of Ugandan rugby international Sydney Gongodyo in a separate violent incident in the city, further raising fears about public safety.
