The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda has been plunged into mourning following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who spent almost his entire life as the kingdom’s monarch.
The king died on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34 while receiving medical care in the United States. He had reportedly been seriously ill shortly before his death.
His passing was announced by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who said the loss would be deeply felt by the royal family, the Tooro community and the wider Ugandan population.
Born in 1992, Oyo became king after the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995.
He was only three years old when he inherited the throne, making his accession an extraordinary event that attracted attention far beyond Uganda.
From Child Monarch to Adult King
Since Oyo was a young child when he became king, members of the royal establishment assisted with the affairs of the kingdom during his early years.
As he grew older, Oyo gradually assumed more responsibilities and became an adult representative of the Tooro Kingdom.
His remarkable life story made him a unique figure in modern African royalty. He inherited a historic institution as a small child and spent decades growing into the role while remaining closely associated with Tooro’s cultural heritage.
Following his death, the kingdom has moved to reassure the public that the traditional line of succession remains intact.
Officials say Oyo had a son who is regarded as his heir, although the identity of the successor will be officially announced at the appropriate time in accordance with Tooro customs.
Meanwhile, Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi has summoned members of the royal family to Karuziika Palace for an emergency meeting as the kingdom begins preparations for the next stage of its royal succession.
For many people in Tooro, King Oyo’s legacy will be remembered not simply because he became king at three, but because the throne remained a defining part of his life from childhood until his death.
