The Niger State Government has constituted an investigative committee to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago disclosed the development during a press conference as authorities move to establish what led to the deaths.

Committee to Investigate Deaths

The committee is expected to examine the events surrounding the incident and determine the root cause of the deaths.

The investigation will also provide findings that could guide the state government in deciding on further action.

The deaths occurred while the suspected illegal miners were being held by the NSCDC Niger State Command.

Authorities Seek Answers

Governor Bago said the investigation is aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The committee will therefore focus on the events leading up to the deaths and other relevant issues connected to the miners’ detention.

The state government is expected to consider the committee’s findings after the investigation is completed.

The development comes as authorities seek clarity over one of the most serious incidents involving suspected illegal miners in Niger State.
