England produced an entertaining performance at Wembley, but their 3-2 defeat to Spain showed that attacking freedom alone may not be enough to compete consistently with the world’s leading teams.
Thomas Tuchel had encouraged his players to embrace the chaos as England began the process of recovering from their painful World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina.
Against Spain, however, England discovered that there is a significant difference between creating chaos and controlling it.
Spain were able to do both.
The visitors remained composed during difficult periods, controlled important stages of the game and took advantage of England’s mistakes.
Spain take advantage early
England’s afternoon quickly became difficult.
Marc Guehi was caught in possession after turning into trouble, allowing Lamine Yamal to put Spain ahead inside two minutes.
The early goal immediately placed pressure on the hosts.
Spain then continued to create openings.
Ferran Torres had a goal cancelled for offside and later forced James Trafford into an important save.
Another Torres opportunity followed when he found himself with a clear path to goal, but his attempt went wide.
England could consider themselves fortunate to still be within one goal by the time the match reached the 36th minute.
A different England emerges
Despite the difficult start, England eventually began to find a better way to attack.
Rather than attempting to match Spain pass for pass, Tuchel’s players became more direct.
England used their speed, strength and ability to attack quickly, and that approach caused Spain genuine problems.
It was an important lesson.
England do not necessarily need to copy the style of the teams they face. They can create problems by using the qualities that come naturally to their own players.
That change in approach also produced some of the most positive moments of the match.
What Tuchel must solve
The major question for Tuchel is how to combine that attacking freedom with greater control.
Against a team as technically accomplished as Spain, losing possession in dangerous areas can quickly become costly.
England showed that they can compete, create chances and produce exciting football. But Spain demonstrated how important decision-making, composure and game management remain at the highest level.
The 3-2 scoreline therefore tells only part of the story.
England’s performance contained enough positives to give supporters encouragement, but it also highlighted areas that still require improvement.
If Tuchel can build a side capable of playing with freedom while maintaining defensive organisation and control, England could become much harder to handle in major competitions.
For now, the defeat against Spain serves as another reminder that talent and attacking ambition must be supported by discipline if England are to convert promise into silverware.
