Peter Obi has defended his wife, Margaret, following public debate over a luxury handbag reportedly worth N250 million.
The NDC presidential candidate said his wife’s personal spending should not be confused with his approach to managing public resources.
Obi spoke during an interview in Washington, DC, where he addressed the controversy surrounding the alleged Hermès handbag.
‘She Has Her Own Money’
Obi explained that his wife operates her own business and has independent income.
He said he therefore sees no reason to question what she chooses to purchase with her money.
“My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money?” he said.
The former Anambra governor also said he does not keep track of the prices of his wife’s fashion items.
Obi Says He Does Not Know the Prices
According to Obi, the bags and shoes his wife uses are not something he personally monitors.
“The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost,” he said.
He added that his only concern would be if his wife’s activities affected the way he manages public funds.
The comments come as the controversy continues to generate debate on social media and among political observers.
No First Lady Office Under Obi
Obi also recalled his time as governor of Anambra State.
He said he did not create an official office for the First Lady during his administration.
The former governor also explained that he does not personally celebrate his birthday.
However, he said he does not stop people from marking the occasion.
Luxury Spending Sparks Political Debate
The controversy has raised questions because Obi has built much of his political appeal around messages of prudence and responsible management of resources.
His latest comments, however, draw a clear line between his handling of public funds and his wife’s personal finances.
He also dismissed any suggestion that he should determine how his wife spends her own money.
“In fact, she is actually a bit less sophisticated now,” Obi said, referring to his wife’s fashion choices.
The controversy is likely to remain part of the wider political conversation as Obi continues his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
