British counter-terrorism officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of five men near RAF Fairford after suspicious vehicles were reported travelling towards the military facility.
The suspects are all British nationals living in London and are aged between 23 and 25, according to Counter Terrorism Policing.
They were arrested early Sunday in Whelford, Gloucestershire, after authorities were alerted to three suspicious vehicles in the area. The suspects were initially detained over alleged offences under the Explosives Act and were later arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
Police said the investigation remains at an early stage and that officers are pursuing several lines of inquiry.
Authorities have not publicly established what the men were allegedly planning or identified a confirmed motive.
Bomb experts examine vans
Three white vans linked to the investigation were examined by bomb disposal specialists.
The police operation resulted in a major security response around Whelford, with approximately 85 households evacuated as a precaution.
Military and police personnel remained deployed around RAF Fairford while specialist teams examined the scene.
The base is owned by the UK but is used by the United States military and has played a role in American military operations.
Its connection to US operations involving Iran has prompted speculation about whether the incident could have been linked to the wider conflict.
Police cautious over motive
Despite the speculation, British authorities have not confirmed an Iranian connection.
Reuters reported that investigators were considering several possible explanations, including possible links to Iran, Russia or non-state militant groups. However, police have yet to announce a conclusion.
Iran’s embassy in London has denied any involvement and rejected claims linking Tehran to the incident.
British officials have meanwhile appealed for restraint as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
Local alert triggered police response
The initial police response followed a report from a local resident who became concerned after seeing suspicious activity around the village.
A farmer who contacted emergency services said she had seen several hooded and masked men in the area.
Her account helped trigger the emergency response that eventually led to the arrests.
However, officials have stressed that individual eyewitness accounts may not provide the complete picture of what happened.

The arrests have heightened security concerns among residents living near RAF Fairford.
