The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has officially awarded 37 oil and gas blocks to successful bidders, urging recipients to commence exploration and development activities without unnecessary delays.

The Commission said the awards form part of the Federal Government’s efforts to boost investment in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector, increase crude oil production, and unlock the country’s vast hydrocarbon resources.

Speaking during the award ceremony, NUPRC officials stressed that companies granted the oil blocks must comply with all licensing conditions, meet prescribed timelines, and fulfill their financial and operational obligations as stipulated under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

The Commission warned that failure to adhere to agreed work programmes or unnecessary delays in developing the assets could attract regulatory sanctions, including the possible revocation of licences in accordance with applicable laws.

According to the regulator, the licensing round was conducted through a transparent and competitive process designed to attract credible investors with the technical and financial capacity to develop Nigeria’s oil and gas resources efficiently.

NUPRC noted that the successful development of the newly awarded blocks is expected to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, increase government revenue, and strengthen Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s leading oil and gas producers.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step towards revitalising upstream investment. However, experts also stressed the importance of regulatory certainty, improved security in oil-producing regions, and timely project execution to maximise the benefits of the awards.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for investors while ensuring that operators comply with industry regulations, environmental standards, and host community obligations
