Customers of Ikeja Electric Plc who previously paid for electricity meters under the Meter Asset Provider scheme can now begin receiving refunds from the company.
The refund programme was announced at Ikeja Electric’s September virtual stakeholder meeting, where the company provided updates on its operations and responded to issues raised by customers.
Rather than making cash payments directly to customers, Ikeja Electric said approved refunds will be applied as credits during electricity vending transactions over the authorised refund period.
Customers can check refund details online
Ikeja Electric said customers do not have to rely solely on physical visits to its offices to monitor their refund status.
Eligible customers can check their refund information online by using their meter number or account number.
The company’s refund dashboard allows customers to see important details, including the cost of the meter, the number of refund payments already made, the monthly refund amount and the total amount received.
Customers can also see the date of their latest refund and access information relating to the applicable refund token.
The company said the relevant token would be delivered through the phone number or email address registered on the customer’s account.
For customers who encounter problems with their refunds, Ikeja Electric advised them to contact the company through its recognised complaint channels or visit the nearest undertaking office.
Company raises alarm over illegal electrical activities
Beyond the refund programme, the electricity company used the stakeholder meeting to draw attention to the dangers of unauthorised electrical work.
Olaniyi Olayiwola, Ikeja Electric’s Head of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment, urged residents to stay away from activities that could expose them to electrical hazards.
He warned against hiring unqualified persons to climb Ikeja Electric poles, work on power lines, interfere with electrical installations or make illegal connections.
According to him, some recent incidents involving unauthorised activities around the company’s network have resulted in loss of life.
The company therefore advised customers who notice unsafe activities around its infrastructure to report them through the appropriate channels.
Residents advised not to confront unsafe workers
Olayiwola further advised members of the public not to personally confront people who may be carrying out dangerous electrical work.
Instead, residents should notify Ikeja Electric through its designated safety and emergency channels so that the matter can be handled appropriately.
He also called on communities to keep buildings and other structures at a safe distance from high-voltage power lines.
According to the company, encroachment on electricity infrastructure and insufficient right-of-way continue to create serious safety concerns.
Ikeja Electric encourages customers to use official channels
Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, also encouraged customers to depend on the company’s official communication and complaint platforms when seeking information or reporting problems.
He said regular engagement with customers is intended to give them the information and support needed to stay safe and resolve service-related concerns.
The company urged customers with questions about the meter refund process or electrical safety to make use of its official channels rather than relying on unauthorised sources.
