A flight instructor and a student pilot were killed when a small training aircraft crashed in Kajiado County, southern Kenya.

The accident happened on Friday in Kipeto, a hilly part of the county located southwest of Nairobi.

Police said the aircraft was carrying the two victims during a training flight when it crashed near a wind turbine area.

The names of those killed had not been made public.

Crash Site Close to Schools

The aircraft crashed into a dry field near a number of schools.

Footage from the scene showed the plane badly damaged and separated into several sections.

Security personnel and other responders cordoned off the area while debris from the aircraft remained scattered across the field.

Several schoolchildren were also seen near the crash site.

Community Raises Safety Concerns

Residents said the location of the crash caused particular concern because of the nearby schools.

Duncan Akaranga, whose child attends a school in the area, said the community was shocked by the incident.

According to Akaranga, the presence of several schools and many students nearby meant the crash could have had a wider impact.

Morning Mist May Have Affected Visibility

Witnesses told the Associated Press that thick morning mist had covered the area and reduced visibility around the time of the accident.

However, authorities had not confirmed whether the weather conditions contributed to the crash.

Police are expected to investigate the incident and determine what caused the training aircraft to go down.

The two fatalities were the student pilot and the flight instructor aboard the aircraft.
