President Bola Tinubu has received an endorsement from the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The group’s President-General, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, made the announcement while addressing participants at the conference’s 2026 synod on Wednesday.
Kawas said the decision was reached after members reviewed what he described as the performance and political appointments of the current administration.
He particularly defended the President against allegations of religious favouritism, pointing to appointments made at the federal level and what he described as the growing number of Christian governors.
The bishop said Tinubu had demonstrated support for Christians despite the controversy that surrounded the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress during the 2023 election.
“He did not only appoint at the national level; he also supported the emergence of Christian governors to be the majority in Nigeria,” Kawas said.
He also praised Tinubu’s wife for what he described as her Christian commitment and said the President had “stood with Christianity.”
The conference further applauded the APC for appointing a Christian preacher as its national leader, describing the development as significant.
Kawas said the bishops would continue to support the Tinubu administration through prayers and advocacy, particularly in relation to policies and programmes they believe are capable of advancing Nigeria’s development.
The endorsement comes as political activities and alignments gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the decision represents the position of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria and should not be taken as representing the views of all Christian leaders or organisations in the country.
