Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has encouraged Nigerians to use the 2027 general elections as a platform for demanding political change, suggesting that election day is the ideal time for a revolution.

In an interview with Symfoni TV, Yesufu highlighted issues within Nigeria’s electoral system, including the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the necessity for free, fair, and credible elections.

She emphasized that Nigerians should regard the ballot box as a potent and peaceful tool for shifting the nation’s political course.

Yesufu remarked that election day offers no better opportunity for revolution, contending that the individuals operating within electoral institutions are more to blame for the challenges plaguing Nigeria’s elections than INEC as an organization.

Calling for Credible Elections

Yesufu underscored the importance of ensuring that the 2027 elections genuinely represent the will of Nigerian voters.

She called on citizens to demand accountability from electoral officials, security personnel, and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

The activist cited discrepancies she believes existed between the results of the 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections, asserting that addressing these issues is crucial to bolstering public confidence in democracy.

Vigilance and Accountability

Yesufu stressed that Nigerians need to stay vigilant on election day, ensuring that electoral officials and security agencies fulfill their duties with professionalism.

She argued that Nigerians should not solely rely on INEC officials’ willingness to conduct credible elections but should also insist that electoral rules are upheld.

Her statements were made as reports from the interview emerged, emphasizing the need for everyone to do their part correctly.

With political parties and politicians already gearing up for the 2027 general elections, debates over electoral reform, accountability, and Nigeria’s future direction are heating up.

Elections as a Pathway to Change

Yesufu described the concept of “revolution” as citizens utilizing the electoral process to achieve political change, rather than resorting to unconstitutional methods.

She advocated for credible elections as a peaceful means for Nigerians to replace leaders and demand improved governance.

As the 2027 elections approach, her comments are likely to fuel the ongoing national discourse on how Nigerians can safeguard the integrity of the electoral process to ensure their votes truly determine the country’s political leadership.
