A court has sentenced three persons to life imprisonment for their roles in the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, bringing a significant legal conclusion to one of the state’s most disturbing kidnapping cases.

The convicts were found guilty after the court considered evidence presented by the prosecution, which established their involvement in the planning and execution of the school abduction. The trial court held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

In delivering judgment, the court condemned the actions of the convicts, describing the kidnapping of innocent pupils and educators as a grave offence that endangered lives, disrupted education, and created widespread fear within the community.

The judge ruled that the severity of the crime warranted life imprisonment, emphasizing the need to deter others from engaging in similar criminal acts.

The case followed investigations by security agencies, which led to the arrest and prosecution of the suspects after the victims were abducted during the attack on the school.

The judgment has been welcomed by many residents, education stakeholders, and civil society organisations, who described the conviction as a major step in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes targeting schools.

Legal experts noted that the ruling reinforces the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring accountability for crimes that threaten public safety and undermine access to education.

Authorities have reiterated their resolve to continue working with security agencies to strengthen the protection of schools and ensure that those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.
