Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan, defeating moderate Congresswoman Haley Stevens in a closely watched contest that exposed deep divisions within the Democratic Party.

According to projections by CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, the former public health official secured the party’s nomination ahead of Stevens, a four-term member of Congress.

El-Sayed campaigned on a progressive platform, backing policies such as Medicare for All, abolishing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and ending unconditional US military aid to Israel.

His victory sets up a high-stakes showdown with Republican candidate Mike Rogers, a close ally of President Donald Trump, in November’s midterm elections.

If elected, El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, would become the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate.

Speaking after his projected victory, El-Sayed described his campaign as part of a broader movement for economic and healthcare reform.

“The movement to get money out of politics, put money in your pocket, and pass Medicare for All is a big movement,” he said.

He also pledged to represent all Michigan residents regardless of their political affiliation.

“I want to support constituents whether you supported me or not, whether you voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 or Donald Trump,” El-Sayed added.

In a statement, Stevens congratulated her opponent and endorsed him for the general election.

“I want to congratulate Abdul El-Sayed on winning the Democratic nomination for US Senate. He is a doctor, a community health official, a Rhodes Scholar and a dedicated Michigander. I am proud to offer my support as he takes on Mike Rogers in the general election,” she said.
