The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has granted the Federal Government an additional three weeks to finalize negotiations on its remaining demands. The association cautioned that failing to reach an agreement may lead to a three-day warning strike.
This ultimatum was announced in a communiqué shared with journalists in Uyo after NAMDA’s Emergency National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting. The document, signed by President Nosa Orhue and Acting Secretary-General Aniekan Peter, indicated that this extension would last until August 31, 2026.
The communiqué mentioned that a three-week extension was agreed upon for further deliberation. NAMDA urged the government to use this time to resolve all outstanding issues. If there is no satisfactory resolution by August 31, 2026, a three-day warning strike will be declared by the National Organizing Committee.
NAMDA also instructed its branches across the nation to organize congresses and sensitization programs for their members at least twice during the extension period. These branches are expected to provide evidence and reports of their mobilization activities to the National Executive Council through the secretariat, demonstrating their readiness for a potential strike.
The association expressed its concerns about the government’s hesitance to conclude negotiations, while also commending the Department of State Services (DSS) and other stakeholders for their efforts in the negotiation process. NAMDA acknowledged its members’ patience and cooperation in maintaining stability within the university system.
It further criticized the government for allegedly neglecting medical education and training, especially considering the shortage of medical and dental professionals and the increasing trend of professionals migrating abroad, known as the “Japa” syndrome. NAMDA reaffirmed its dedication to the full implementation of all approved benefits for medical and dental lecturers and urged its members to adhere to all directives and decisions made at the meeting.
