Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has attributed the early bedtime, limited nightlife, and rising population in rural communities to the lack of electricity.

Fayose expressed these views on Friday in Abuja following his appointment as Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency board.

In a video shared by ARISE News on Saturday, he noted that the absence of electricity in rural areas restricts recreational activities, leaving residents with little choice but to stay indoors at night.

He remarked, “When you don’t address the issue of electricity, people at that level have no other attractions. Nothing else captures their interest. After 7 o’clock, it becomes dark there.”

“Everyone tends to spend more time with their families, and as a result, population growth doubles. This is simply because there’s no electricity.”

Fayose suggested that providing electricity to rural areas would encourage residents to enjoy the nightlife and offer alternative recreational activities.

“People go to bed early because they resign themselves to the limited recreation available. But addressing electricity will change that, introducing nightlife and allowing for recreation beyond the home,” he added.

Fayose made these comments as he took on leadership of the REA board, which plays a key role in the Federal Government’s mission to expand electricity access to underserved and unserved communities throughout Nigeria.
