Intense combat in Baidoa, a vital city in Somalia, has led to the deaths of at least four civilians and injuries to 98 others, as government forces engaged with militias contesting federal authority.

The conflict commenced early Monday when armed factions initiated assaults on government-controlled positions in the southwestern city. Somali officials reported that federal troops ultimately repelled the assailants and regained control over the impacted regions.

The clashes reportedly resulted in numerous combatant fatalities, with government representatives asserting that approximately 30 attackers were killed, while authorities in South West State indicated around 50 deaths. These statistics have not been independently confirmed.

The violence caused considerable harm to civilians. Dr. Abdikafi Omar Mohamud, who leads the emergency department at Bay Regional Hospital, verified that at least four civilians perished, and 98 others sustained injuries. Among the injured were 28 women and an elderly man struck by stray bullets.

The escalation in violence has placed additional strain on an already under-resourced healthcare system. The hospital had only about 40 beds, necessitating the establishment of an emergency tent to accommodate the surge of injured individuals.

Residents have remarked that this was one of the most severe confrontations witnessed in Baidoa since federal forces took control of the city in March.

Underlying these recent events are tensions between Somalia’s federal government and leaders of South West State. The militias included supporters of former South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, who resigned following the federal troops’ takeover of Baidoa earlier this year.

Laftagareen’s contested re-election has been dismissed by the federal government, resulting in escalating discord regarding political power, elections, and proposed constitutional reforms. Security analysts warn that political strife escalating into violence could provide opportunities for extremist groups such as al-Shabab.

The situation became increasingly complex due to concurrent assaults by al-Shabab militants on military installations surrounding Baidoa. Somali authorities have indicated a potential collaboration between the extremists and local militias, although this has not yet been independently verified.

Baidoa is of significant strategic importance and is home to hundreds of thousands of individuals displaced by conflict, drought, and famine. By Tuesday, the city had largely returned to a state of normalcy, although government forces continued to exercise caution with heightened security measures and patrols.

These recent clashes have reignited worries regarding Somalia’s unstable political environment and the detrimental effects of renewed violence on a civilian population that is already grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis.
