In the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election, Umar Ardo, a political strategist and Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, has pinpointed two significant hurdles that may hinder former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, from establishing a strong opposition coalition.
During an interview on Arise News, Ardo highlighted that the main challenge is whether either politician would be willing to step aside for the other.
The Unlikely Withdrawal of Atiku
Ardo expressed skepticism about Atiku’s willingness to exit the presidential race, even if it meant uniting the opposition. While stepping down could help Atiku retain his political base, Ardo believes such a move is improbable. “Atiku is unlikely to voluntarily decide to step down. Even if doing so wouldn’t alienate his supporters, it’s doubtful he would make that choice,” Ardo noted.
Obi and His Base Dilemma
Conversely, Ardo sees Peter Obi as more capable of withdrawing, yet warns that doing so might lead to substantial difficulties with his supporters who may not easily back another candidate. “Obi might say, ‘I will step down,’ but he risks losing his support base in the process,” Ardo remarked.
The Solution Lies in Overcoming These Challenges
According to Ardo, unless these issues are addressed, merging the political factions of Atiku and Obi seems unlikely. “Resolving these two challenges is essential; otherwise, a full merger is difficult to imagine,” he stated.
Despite potential obstacles to coalition-building, Ardo believes both politicians still have a shot at challenging President Tinubu individually.
Potential for Individual Success
Ardo contends that even without a coalition, Atiku and Obi individually could disrupt the current political landscape. “They each have enough influence to potentially win against the incumbent,” he asserted.
His remarks come amidst ongoing efforts by opposition figures to construct a broad political alliance for 2027, with leadership of any unified ticket remaining a key question.
