Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called on legal professionals to uphold the rule of law, constitutional democracy, and the fundamental rights of citizens with courage and integrity.
Speaking at the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, themed “Beyond Limits,” Fubara emphasized the role of the legal system as a cornerstone in the relationship between government, public institutions, and private organizations. He stressed that the ultimate purpose of law is to ensure the security and wellbeing of citizens.
He highlighted that this involves equality before the law, the safeguarding of human rights, and fostering an environment conducive to socio-economic activities and national development.
Lawyers Should Speak Truth to Authority
Fubara cautioned against ignoring the rule of law and democratic principles, emphasizing that peace, order, and meaningful development can only flourish when the law is respected. He underscored that courts should not just serve as venues for dispute resolution but as sanctuaries for citizens seeking justice and protection of their rights.
The governor advised judges to consider the broader implications of their decisions, noting that justice delivered with integrity directly influences law, order, and national development. He urged legal professionals to remain independent and courageous, avoiding becoming apologists or conformists.
He remarked, “As a layman, I am compelled to agree with the portrayal of lawyers as the subtle nerves of the nation’s backbone.”
Furthermore, he urged lawyers to resist attempts by political leaders to undermine the Constitution and rule of law, emphasizing the profession’s duty to prevent abuse of power and protect democratic institutions and citizens’ rights. “The greatest duty of a lawyer is to have the conscience, commitment, and courage to speak truth to power and defend citizens’ rights,” he added.
