The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has played down concerns about his age ahead of the 2027 presidential election, urging critics to assess him based on his vitality and capability rather than his years.

In an interview with BBC Hausa released on Friday, Atiku addressed queries about whether his age might hinder his effectiveness in leading for a four-year presidential term.

The interviewer highlighted that by the 2027 election, Atiku would be nearing 80. They questioned how he would respond to those who feel he might be too advanced in age for the presidency.

Atiku countered by referencing the age of President Bola Tinubu, critiquing the basis of such concerns.

“You elected someone who is either 80 or, as some say, 90. How old is President Bola, 90?” Atiku queried.

After being informed that Tinubu had not yet reached 80, Atiku retorted: “Do I appear to you like I’ve turned 80?”

Atiku Defends Efforts in Building an Opposition Coalition

His remarks come as Atiku ramps up preparations for the 2027 presidential election and continues to promote an opposition coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He dismissed claims that he has become a hindrance to the coalition, asserting his pivotal role in its creation.

“These are unfounded accusations against me. I was indeed the one who initiated the coalition. No one else… it was me, Atiku Abubakar,” he stated.

According to Atiku, the majority of politicians involved in establishing the coalition have stayed united despite some disputes among top opposition figures.

He specifically mentioned Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as key figures who have since departed from the alliance.

“It was just Kwankwaso… he initially joined us and then left,” Atiku noted.

On being asked about Obi, he added: “Yes, Peter Obi too. It’s just them. The rest of us are still here, continuing our work.”

Atiku’s statements emerge amidst growing political shifts as the 2027 elections approach, with opposition parties and leaders seeking alliances and strategies to take on the APC.
