Manchester City have made one of the biggest statements of the transfer window after securing Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for a reported £125 million.

The deadline-day agreement is understood to match the British transfer record, with the 25-year-old Argentine midfielder signing a contract that runs through 2031.

For Chelsea, the deal provides a remarkable financial return on a player they bought from Benfica for approximately £107 million in early 2023. Fernández now becomes the first footballer to be transferred for more than £100 million on two separate occasions.

Manchester City’s decision to spend heavily on Fernández reflects the club’s need for a new midfield leader following a period of significant squad changes.

Rodri’s move to Barcelona has left a major gap in the centre of the team, while several other experienced midfielders have also moved on. City believe Fernández can provide the technical ability and tactical flexibility required to fill the void.

The Argentine midfielder offers more than defensive protection. He is capable of controlling possession, setting the pace of matches, making progressive passes and contributing directly to goals.

His numbers from last season further explain City’s interest. Fernández finished the 2025/26 campaign with 15 goals and seven assists and was also part of Argentina’s squad that reached the 2026 World Cup final.

His familiarity with Enzo Maresca could also help him settle quickly at the Etihad. The pair previously worked together at Chelsea, giving the City manager an understanding of Fernández’s strengths and preferred roles.

The signing comes during an ambitious rebuilding exercise at Manchester City. The club have already brought in several new faces as Maresca attempts to construct a squad capable of challenging Arsenal and competing for major honours.

Fernández’s arrival could therefore prove central to the next chapter of City’s project.

The £125 million investment sends a clear message that Manchester City are prepared to spend heavily to regain their position at the top of English football.
