The world of cinema has turned its attention to Italy as the 83rd Venice International Film Festival gets underway at the Venice Lido.
Running for 11 days, the prestigious event will feature film premieres, competition entries and appearances from some of the biggest personalities in international cinema.
Hollywood veteran George Clooney is among the main attractions this year, with the actor and filmmaker scheduled to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
The award recognises a remarkable career that has taken Clooney from television to the highest levels of international filmmaking.
Over the years, he has become known for performances in major productions such as Ocean’s Eleven, Michael Clayton, Syriana and Up in the Air. He has also established himself behind the camera through his work as a director and producer.
Among his directing credits are Good Night, and Good Luck and The Ides of March, projects that demonstrated his interest in serious political and social themes.
Beyond the celebrations surrounding individual stars, the festival is also highlighting the role of cinema in addressing the realities of the modern world.
Alberto Barbera, director of the Venice festival, said contemporary issues were strongly represented among the films selected for this year’s programme.
He described the festival as a forum where filmmakers are able to express themselves freely and where audiences can discuss challenging subjects from different perspectives.
Barbera said he was particularly pleased that the selected films could encourage viewers and critics to better understand some of the difficult circumstances facing society today.
As Venice welcomes another international gathering of filmmakers and movie stars, Clooney’s honorary Golden Lion is set to provide one of the standout moments of the 83rd edition.
