Political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State appears to be gathering pace, following a reported strategic meeting involving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other influential stakeholders in Spain.

Those reportedly present at the meeting included South South Development Commission executive director, Chief Marcus Nle Ejii, University of Port Harcourt Chancellor Senator Mao Ohabunwa, and Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara was notably not listed among those who attended the meeting.

Fubara had recently aligned himself with the Rainbow Coalition, making his absence from the Spain gathering a development likely to attract political attention.

While details of what was discussed at the meeting remain undisclosed, the gathering comes at a significant time, with preparations for the 2027 elections already intensifying across Rivers State.

Wike, who remains a major political figure in Rivers State, recently identified Chinda as his preferred choice to take over from Fubara.

The timing of the meeting is also significant because INEC has confirmed that the campaign period for the February 6, 2027 governorship election began on September 8.

With campaigns now officially underway, political stakeholders in Rivers State are expected to increase consultations, alliances and mobilisation efforts as the contest takes shape.
