Members of Nigeria’s D’Tigress have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each as part of the Presidential Reward for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket championship.
The National Sports Commission announced that the accounts of the players were credited on September 9, 2026, while team officials received the naira equivalent of $50,000 each.
The commission said every player and official who benefited from the payment had confirmed receipt of the funds.
The cash reward forms part of a wider package approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following D’Tigress’ remarkable performance at the continental tournament.
The team’s reward package also included three-bedroom flats in Abuja and national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON).
The NSC said the latest disbursement means the government has now fulfilled all elements of the presidential reward promised to the team.
D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive Afrobasket title in 2025, extending their dominance of women’s basketball in Africa and taking their total number of continental titles to seven.
The commission’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, said the payment represented the completion of the financial component of the presidential reward.
The NSC had earlier disclosed that the players and officials received documentation for their Abuja apartments and certificates for their national honours in February 2026 while they were in Lyon, France, for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
The documents were duly signed by President Tinubu, according to the commission.
The latest development has brought the government’s reward commitments to the African champions to a close, with the players and officials now having received the cash, housing and national recognition announced in honour of their achievement.
