South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is resting after returning from the BRICS summit in India, his office has confirmed.

The 73-year-old president returned home on Monday after the meeting of BRICS leaders in New Delhi.

According to the presidency, Ramaphosa was advised by his doctors to rest and recover.

As a result, he has stepped back from public engagements for the time being.

Ministers to Represent President

Ramaphosa’s office said ministers would represent him at some official events when necessary.

This arrangement will allow scheduled government engagements to continue while the president rests.

The presidency did not disclose the specific illness affecting Ramaphosa.

Deputy President Still on Recovery

The development comes as Deputy President Paul Mashatile is also away from public duties.

Mashatile is recovering from a minor medical procedure.

He said his recovery was going well and that he was becoming stronger each day.

He also said he would continue resting until his doctors give him further advice.

Both Leaders Away

The absence of South Africa’s two top political leaders has attracted attention because both are currently recovering.

However, their offices say government work and delegated responsibilities are continuing.

Ramaphosa’s BRICS Engagement

Before returning home, Ramaphosa attended the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

The two-day meeting ended on Sunday.

BRICS leaders discussed issues including inclusive global growth and developments in the Middle East.

The bloc consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Elections Ahead

Ramaphosa and Mashatile are stepping back from public duties as South Africa approaches a busy political period.

Local government elections are scheduled for November 4.

For now, the presidency has indicated that ministers and government officials will continue handling scheduled responsibilities while Ramaphosa rests.
