Popular Anambra native doctor Chidozie Nwanyi, better known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, has been released after Governor Chukwuma Soludo granted him a pardon.
The governor also appointed him Ambassador for Youth Reformation.
Nwanyi had been serving an 11-month sentence at the Nigeria Correctional Facility in Amawbia after reaching a plea bargain with the Anambra State Government.
Why Akwa Okuko Was Arrested
Nwanyi was among eight native doctors arrested last year over alleged promotion of money rituals, quick wealth and the use of human parts for ritual practices.
Following his plea bargain, he accepted conditions that included renouncing his fetish practice.
He also agreed to take on a role aimed at discouraging youths from harmful practices and promoting reformation.
Soludo Exercises Prerogative of Mercy
Nwanyi had remained in custody until Governor Soludo visited the correctional facility.
During the visit, the governor granted him a pardon under the prerogative of mercy.
The decision effectively ended his remaining prison term and paved the way for his new role as Ambassador for Youth Reformation.
Official Explains the Idea
The governor’s Special Adviser on Youth Reformation, Dr Nelson Omenugha, announced the development.
Omenugha described the pardon as an example of the government’s approach to correcting and rehabilitating individuals.
He thanked Soludo for giving Nwanyi an opportunity to begin a new chapter.
The adviser said youth reformation should involve more than punishment, stressing the importance of correction, restoration and a renewed sense of purpose.
The appointment now places Akwa Okuko in a public-facing role focused on youth reformation in Anambra State.
