The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has threatened legal action over remarks allegedly made by a guest during a television programme, describing the comments as inflammatory and unacceptable.
According to the lawyers, the television guest allegedly made a statement suggesting that Kanu should be killed. The legal team condemned the remark, arguing that it amounted to incitement and posed a threat to their client’s constitutional rights, including his right to life and fair hearing.
In a statement, Kanu’s counsel called on the television station to publicly address the incident and urged the relevant regulatory authorities to investigate the matter. The lawyers also warned that they were considering legal proceedings against those responsible for the alleged comment.
They maintained that public discourse, particularly on national broadcast platforms, should remain respectful and within the bounds of the law. According to the legal team, disagreements over political or legal issues should never translate into statements that could be interpreted as encouraging violence.
The television station and the guest involved had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
Legal experts note that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression while also imposing legal limits on speech that may incite violence or threaten the safety of individuals. They say any dispute arising from the broadcast would ultimately be determined through the appropriate legal processes.
