The African Democratic Congress has raised concerns over the rising cost of petrol in Nigeria.
The opposition party reacted after petrol prices reached as high as ₦1,470 per litre.
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi made the party’s position known in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.
Fuel increase affects households
The ADC said the latest petrol increase is putting additional pressure on Nigerian households.
According to the party, the effect is being felt in several areas of daily life.
These include transportation, food, electricity and education.
The party said families are also dealing with higher rent and other living expenses.
It argued that wages have not increased at the same rate.
Private school fees
The opposition party also raised concerns about rising school fees.
It cited reports that some private schools had increased their fees by between 30 and 40 per cent.
The ADC said school owners are also facing higher operating costs.
These include fuel, electricity, taxes, rent and staff salaries.
For that reason, the party said it does not blame school proprietors for the increases.
However, it warned that parents are carrying much of the financial burden.
ADC attacks government reforms
The party accused the Tinubu administration of imposing too much pressure on Nigerians through its economic policies.
The ADC described the current petrol price as another major burden.
It also criticised what it called excessive spending by public officials.
The party said economic reforms should improve the lives of citizens rather than make basic needs harder to afford.
It called for policies that would reduce the pressure on families and businesses.
ADC links issue to 2027
The opposition party also used the development to highlight its 2027 campaign message.
It said Atiku Abubakar would seek to reduce petrol costs by supporting domestic fuel production and a subsidy arrangement.
The ADC said cheaper fuel would help reduce transportation and production costs.
It also argued that lower energy costs could ease pressure on food prices.
The party urged the Federal Government to take steps to address the economic difficulties facing Nigerians.
