American country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family announced on Tuesday.
Parton rose from poverty in Tennessee to become one of the most influential figures in American music and entertainment. Her career produced iconic songs including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, said Parton had “opened doors for generations” of singers, songwriters and musicians.
The cause of death was not immediately disclosed. Parton had spoken publicly about health concerns in recent months and cancelled a series of Las Vegas performances earlier this year.
Beyond music, Parton was also celebrated as an actress, philanthropist and successful businesswoman. She wrote thousands of songs during a career spanning more than six decades.
Her death has prompted tributes from political leaders, celebrities and fans around the world, marking the loss of one of country music’s most enduring cultural icons.
