Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is set to join Charlton Athletic on loan from Wrexham, in a move aimed at giving the Nigerian shot-stopper more regular playing time.
The 24-year-old has one year remaining on his Wrexham contract and is expected to become a free agent next summer.
Okonkwo joined Wrexham from Arsenal in September 2023 and quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
However, his position changed towards the end of last season after he lost his starting spot.
The arrival of Anthony Patterson from Sunderland in a club-record deal reportedly worth about £8 million has further increased competition for the goalkeeper position at Wrexham.
Charlton Beat Bolton to Okonkwo
Charlton Athletic reportedly moved ahead of Bolton Wanderers in the race to secure Okonkwo’s services.
The loan move is expected to provide the Super Eagles goalkeeper with an opportunity to regain regular first-team football and continue his development.
Okonkwo will now look to make an impact at Charlton while competing for a place in Nigeria’s national team setup.
