Rwanda international Joy-Lance Mickels has identified Kylian Mbappé as the player he believes should win the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
The Sabah FC forward expressed his support for the Real Madrid striker while preparing with Rwanda for the team’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia.
Mickels praised Mbappé’s performances over the season and said the France captain had demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the world’s leading footballers.
“For me, Kylian Mbappe deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” Mickels said, according to The New Times.
“What he has done this season has been exceptional, and I think he has shown why he is one of the best players in the world.”
Mbappé Among 30 Ballon d’Or Nominees
Mbappé has officially been included among the 30 nominees for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or.
The shortlist also features other major names, including Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Ousmane Dembélé.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on October 26, marking the 70th edition of the prestigious award.
Mickels Turns Attention to Rwanda’s AFCON Campaign
Mickels’ comments came as Rwanda prepares for its opening AFCON 2027 qualifying fixture against Liberia.
The forward recently said Rwanda’s objective is to qualify for the tournament and described the campaign as an opportunity for the national team to achieve something significant.
His endorsement adds another voice to the debate surrounding the 2026 Ballon d’Or, although the final decision will be determined through the official voting process.
