Reality TV star and entrepreneur Mercy Eke has said she would not date or marry a man who expects her to cook regularly, stressing that she believes relationships should be built on mutual understanding rather than traditional gender roles.

Speaking during a recent interview, the former Big Brother Naija winner explained that while she knows how to cook and can prepare meals when she chooses, she would not be comfortable in a relationship where cooking is treated as a daily obligation or expectation.

According to Mercy, modern relationships should allow couples to share responsibilities based on convenience, lifestyle, and personal preferences instead of placing domestic duties solely on women.

“I can’t date or marry a man who wants me to cook regularly,” she said, adding that she values partnership, respect, and flexibility in a relationship.

Her comments have sparked widespread debate on social media, with many users expressing differing opinions on gender roles in marriage. While some agreed that household responsibilities should be shared equally, others argued that cooking remains an important part of family life and should not be overlooked.

Relationship experts say successful marriages thrive on communication and compromise, noting that couples should discuss expectations regarding finances, household chores, and family responsibilities before committing to a long-term relationship.

Mercy Eke, who rose to fame after winning the 2019 edition of Big Brother Naija, has remained one of Nigeria’s most influential reality TV personalities, frequently making headlines for her views on relationships, lifestyle, and personal development.

Her latest remarks have once again ignited conversations about evolving relationship dynamics in Nigeria, with many observers pointing out that changing career demands and modern lifestyles are reshaping expectations in marriage.
