Manchester United endured a crushing 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City on Saturday, marking a dismal beginning to their Premier League season.

Returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, Hull delivered an energetic performance despite missing 10 players due to injuries.

Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi stood out among Hull’s performers, finding the back of the net as the hosts shocked United at the MKM Stadium.

Hull’s Stunning Performance

United, who were anticipated to make a strong start after finishing third last season and setting their sights on challenging Arsenal for the title, instead found themselves struggling throughout the match and failing to keep up with Hull’s intensity.

This defeat has already sparked doubts about United’s ability to mount a serious title challenge under manager Michael Carrick, who is now permanently in charge after revitalizing the team last season as an interim manager.

Former England captain and BBC pundit Alan Shearer didn’t mince words about United’s outing.

“Man United have been shocking, no hunger, they’ve been terrible,” Shearer remarked.

New Signings Face Challenges

United’s new midfield additions, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, faced tough starts after joining from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively. The midfield struggled to assert itself as Hull continued to exploit United’s defensive vulnerabilities.

Carrick had previously dismissed any notions that United had an easy start to the season, with an initial away game at Hull followed by a match against another newcomer, Ipswich. This defeat, however, highlighted the challenges facing his team.

Pressure Builds on Carrick

Carrick’s composed leadership was praised for helping United recover during his interim tenure after Ruben Amorim’s turbulent period. His permanent appointment has heightened expectations as the club aims for its first league title since 2013.

Carrick has already voiced the need for additional reinforcements, and United is reportedly finalizing a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. In light of such an underwhelming start, Carrick is likely to press for more signings to bolster the squad.

Hull’s victory also highlighted their swift progress. They became the first team since Blackpool in 2010 to finish sixth in the Championship and secure promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.

For United, this result serves as an early indicator that reclaiming their status atop English football could prove more challenging than anticipated.
