Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced his concern over the recent surge of violence, including killings, abductions, and destruction in the states of Benue, Plateau, and Niger. He warns that Nigeria must not continue to suffer such losses due to insecurity.

In a statement released on Sunday in response to reports of deadly attacks in these North-Central states, Obi emphasized that the magnitude and frequency of this violence should be treated as a national security emergency instead of isolated incidents.

Expressing his concern, Obi stated that despite not being officially at war, Nigerians are facing attacks in their communities. “Nigeria is not at war officially, yet communities face abductions post-prayer and are driven from their homes,” he commented.

He highlighted the implications of the ongoing loss of life, community displacement, and livelihood destruction on national stability and food security. Obi stressed the need for preemptive measures to stop these attacks. “We cannot continue tallying casualties after every incident,” he asserted.

Obi pointed to specific incidents like the recent attack in Jwak Maitumbi, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, which resulted in at least 23 reported deaths and significant property destruction. He also referenced the violence in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, where reports indicated over 40 people were killed and more than 100 abducted. He acknowledged contested figures regarding this incident.

Communities in Benue State are also suffering repeated attacks, abductions, and destruction affecting homes and livelihoods.

Calling for enhanced security measures, Obi urged federal, state, and local governments to bolster intelligence efforts and improve rapid-response capabilities in vulnerable areas. He also pressed security agencies to increase their efforts to rescue abductees and hold those responsible for these violent acts accountable.

Preventative measures, Obi insisted, should take precedence to avoid further loss of life. Protecting citizens’ lives and property is a fundamental government responsibility.

Obi warned that if urgent action is not taken, continued violence could intensify fear and insecurity nationwide. “Nigeria must not become a killing field,” he stated, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to safeguard communities and restore public confidence.

He called for action beyond mere condemnation, advocating for practical strategies to prevent attacks, protect at-risk communities, and ensure justice for victims through legal action against perpetrators.
