Atiku: Nigeria’s 2027 Election Is a Battle Against ‘Thieves’

The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has accused those in power of undermining Nigeria’s election and economy as he gears up for the 2027 general election.

In a video shared on his social media account, Atiku addressed his supporters, stating that the ADC is challenging a political establishment he labeled as corrupt. He expressed, “We are up against thieves. They have stolen the election and our economy. They’ve taken everything.”

The former Vice President reiterated his pledge to reinstate the fuel subsidy if elected in 2027. He clarified that his stance on subsidies remains unchanged, dismissing any comments suggesting otherwise from his media aide, Paul Ibe. Atiku insisted that Ibe’s words did not reflect his views.

Atiku argued that Nigeria possesses sufficient resources to shield its citizens from severe economic difficulties. He noted that the removal of the fuel subsidy has exacerbated poverty and increased transportation and food costs.

He proposed an intervention centered on a targeted subsidy aimed at reducing energy and transportation expenses while bolstering domestic production, instead of returning to the old import-driven subsidy model.

The subsidy issue is poised to be a significant topic in the 2027 presidential campaign as different parties offer various solutions to Nigeria’s cost-of-living challenges.

Atiku’s remarks coincide with the ADC intensifying its critique of the Bola Tinubu administration, focusing on economic policies, security, and governance. The 2027 election is shaping up to be a significant contest between opposition forces and the ruling party, with Atiku presenting the ADC as a viable alternative to the current government.
