Unidentified gunmen have killed Ishaq Yunusa, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area, as reported by the Kogi State Police Command.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, detailed that the attack took place near Ojuwo Olijo at around 5:00 p.m.
According to the police, armed individuals emerged from the surrounding bush and began shooting at motorists traveling on the highway.
A blue Toyota Corolla was later discovered abandoned on the road. Yunusa, identified as the driver, was found dead inside the vehicle.
Another Occupant Abducted
The police reported that another person in the vehicle was abducted by the gunmen and taken into the nearby bush.
Security operatives have launched a search operation in the area, aiming to rescue the abducted victim and capture those responsible for the attack.
The body of the deceased has been transported to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Kankarofi, has ordered ongoing security operations along the affected corridor and instructed officers to enhance efforts to identify and apprehend the attackers.
The police also advised motorists and residents along the route to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
This latest attack has heightened concerns about the insecurity along major highways in Kogi State, especially in areas vulnerable to armed attacks and kidnappings.
