The 2027 African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has asserted that President Bola Tinubu is 90 years old and claims to have evidence to back this up.
In an interview with the BBC released on Friday, Atiku stated he is willing to present this evidence in court if required.
The former vice president justified his continued candidacy for the presidency, emphasizing his stance against military rule and past challenges that have prevented his success in securing the office.
Atiku affirmed his constitutional right to run for elections and expressed his readiness to serve Nigeria, highlighting his experience, competence, and patriotism as key qualifications for the presidency.
Addressing questions about his own age and fitness for office, Atiku compared himself with President Tinubu, arguing that he should pursue the presidency as long as he remains healthy and capable.
“You have a President who is now 90 years old and unwell, while I am healthy and strong. So why wouldn’t I offer myself to serve my country?” Atiku stated.
He continued, “You elected someone who is 90 years old. I have evidence that President Tinubu is 90, and I will present it in court.”
Atiku’s claims regarding the President’s age have not been independently verified and remain allegations from the ADC candidate.
The ADC presidential candidate also criticized the government’s handling of Nigeria’s increasing insecurity, particularly in defense and policing.
He pledged that his administration would take decisive action to address security issues, promising significant improvements within his first year if elected in 2027.
These remarks come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Atiku and other opposition leaders seeking to garner support for an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
