The war of words between Aso Rock and the opposition just got another chapter. Frederick Nwabufo, a senior aide to President Bola Tinubu, has come out swinging at Peter Obi after the NDC presidential candidate made remarks widely read as a jab at the president’s past.

The trigger was a U.S. court proceeding involving decades-old drug trafficking allegations tied to Tinubu — a story that never quite dies in Nigerian political discourse. Obi took to X to remind political leaders that personal ambition is fleeting, while national interest endures. He stopped short of naming Tinubu directly, but the message landed exactly where observers expected.

Nwabufo’s response was sharp and unapologetic. According to him, there is no lingering mystery about Tinubu’s past — the issues raised have already gone through investigation and legal scrutiny, full stop. He labeled Obi’s remarks “ludicrous” and suggested the opposition keeps dragging up the same allegations simply because they lack anything more substantial to campaign on.

Beyond the jab, Nwabufo made a broader appeal: Nigerian political discourse, he said, would be better served by debates over policy and vision rather than personal attacks. As the country edges closer to the 2027 elections, he wants the conversation to shift toward what candidates actually plan to do for Nigerians — not what’s been dug up from the past.

Whether that shift happens is anyone’s guess. For now, the Tinubu-Obi exchange is just the latest flashpoint in a political rivalry that shows no signs of cooling off before the next election cycle.
