A major road accident in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has left 22 people dead and another 28 injured, authorities said on Wednesday.
The crash took place on a road between the Red Sea towns of Dayan and Nuweiba, a route serving an area popular with tourists because of its scenic coastline and mountainous surroundings.
The initial death toll was put at 16 before officials later raised the figure to 22.
Among those killed were 10 Jordanian nationals, according to Egyptian state media. The injured were transported to hospitals in the surrounding area for medical attention.
Egyptian authorities have not announced the circumstances that caused the crash. Further details are expected as officials investigate the incident.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to Egypt’s long-standing road safety problems. Road accidents occur regularly across the country, with reckless driving, poorly maintained vehicles and inconsistent enforcement of traffic regulations often cited as contributing factors.
Official figures indicate that almost 6,000 people lost their lives in road accidents in Egypt during 2025.
