US President Donald Trump has expressed support for the idea of a united Ireland during his two-day visit to the Republic of Ireland.
Trump arrived in Dublin and began his official engagements with Irish leaders.
He met Irish President Catherine Connolly at the presidential residence in Phoenix Park.
The meeting was preceded by a formal military guard of honour.
Trump also met Taoiseach Micheál Martin as part of his diplomatic programme.
‘I Would Love to See It Unified’
One of the major talking points from Trump’s visit was his response to a question about Irish reunification.
Trump said he did not want to interfere in the sensitive political issue.
However, he made clear that he would welcome the prospect of a united Ireland.

During his meeting with Micheál Martin, Trump praised the relationship between Washington and Dublin.

Irish authorities have been preparing for the president’s visit for several months.
Security arrangements have been expanded across areas Trump is expected to visit.
The operation is expected to be among the biggest security deployments in the history of the Irish state.
At the same time, demonstrations are expected in both Dublin and Doonbeg.
Trump Heads to County Clare
Trump is scheduled to travel to his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, after his engagements in Dublin.
The area is also hosting the Irish Open golf tournament.
The president’s visit is expected to remain a major focus of political and public attention throughout his two-day stay.
