Vice President Kashim Shettima will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Tinubu has assigned Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the international gathering, which brings together world leaders and senior government representatives.
Shettima announced the assignment in a statement shared on X.
Shettima to Deliver Nigeria’s Statement
The Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate.
His participation will also include diplomatic and high-level engagements on issues affecting Nigeria, Africa and the wider international community.
The discussions are expected to cover economic development, peace and security, climate action and international cooperation.
Fubara, Lawal and Ministers Join Team
Among those accompanying the Vice President are Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
Several ministers and senior government officials are also part of the Nigerian delegation.
The delegation will represent Nigeria at various meetings and engagements scheduled during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week.
UN Sets September 22 Start for Debate
The United Nations says the General Debate of the 81st General Assembly will open on September 22 and continue through September 26 before concluding on September 28.
The official theme is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Other major events during the week include discussions on climate action, pandemic prevention, sea-level rise and the Right to Development.
Nigeria’s participation will therefore place Shettima at several diplomatic engagements as he represents the country at the global forum.
