Andy Burnham has officially become the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister after being invited by King Charles III to form a government, succeeding Keir Starmer, who resigned as leader of the governing Labour Party.

Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, assumed office after securing overwhelming support from Labour lawmakers to lead the party. His appointment makes him Britain’s seventh prime minister in just over a decade, underscoring the political turbulence that has marked recent years.

In his first address outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham pledged to restore political stability, rebuild public trust in government, and tackle the country’s pressing economic and social challenges. He promised immediate action to ease the cost-of-living crisis, expand affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and strengthen public services.

The new prime minister also vowed to pursue long-term reforms aimed at decentralising power away from Westminster and giving greater authority to local communities. He said his administration would unveil a comprehensive 10-year national development strategy later this year.

Burnham’s first tasks in office include appointing a new Cabinet, setting out his legislative agenda, and addressing economic pressures facing British households. His leadership comes at a time when the government is grappling with inflation, pressure on public services, and broader global security challenges.

Political analysts say Burnham’s administration will be closely watched as he seeks to unite the Labour Party, deliver on campaign promises, and prepare the party for the next general election, which is due by 2029.
