Popular comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, better known as AY, has spoken about the rising cost of featuring Nigerian music artistes at his annual AY Live comedy show.
AY said some established musicians now quote fees of up to N200 million for a single appearance, while some other artistes reportedly demand N80 million or more.
He made the statement while discussing the changing economics of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Big Names Once Performed Through Personal Connections
AY said AY Live has hosted some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars, including Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage and Olamide.
He explained that booking artistes was less expensive in the early years of the show.
At the time, according to AY, friendship and existing relationships often helped organisers secure performances. Some artistes were reportedly willing to accept modest payments to cover their logistics.
Music Industry Growth Drives Higher Fees
The comedian said the emergence of Nigerian artistes as international stars has changed the business.
He pointed to streaming revenue, global endorsements and other international opportunities as some of the factors that have increased the earning power of Nigerian musicians.
AY said these developments mean major artistes now have several sources of income outside comedy shows.
Consequently, he explained, organisers may have to offer substantially higher fees when they want popular musicians on their line-up.
N80m Demands From Emerging Acts
AY also revealed that the high charges are not limited to established stars.
He said some upcoming musicians who have not yet achieved major commercial success are already demanding fees of around N80 million.
The comedian added that having a personal relationship with an artiste can sometimes make negotiations easier.
Without such a relationship, he said, booking a musician for a comedy event can become considerably more expensive.
