Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Lawal was formally received into the opposition party in Abuja on Tuesday after meeting with NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson.
His move comes about three months after he resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate. Current reports confirm that Lawal has now joined the NDC and declared support for its Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket.
Lawal Supports Obi-Kwankwaso
Speaking after joining the NDC, Lawal said he supported the party because of his concerns about insecurity, hunger, disease and other challenges facing Nigeria.
He said Nigerians who are concerned about the situation in the country should support what he described as a political platform representing the future.
Lawal also expressed support for Peter Obi as presidential candidate and Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate.
He said he looked forward to May 29, 2027, when he expected Nigerians to celebrate what he described as a political victory.
From ADC to NDC
Lawal resigned from the ADC in June after Atiku emerged as its presidential candidate.
At the time, he questioned the party’s primary process and subsequently moved away from the ADC.
Before joining the NDC, Lawal had also expressed support for Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party.
Dickson Welcomes Lawal
NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson described Lawal as an experienced political mobiliser and activist.
Dickson said the former SGF would play a leadership role within the party and contribute to its activities and campaign structure in the North-East.
Lawal’s defection adds another prominent figure to the NDC as political parties and politicians continue to realign ahead of the 2027 elections.
