A fresh controversy has emerged following Tuesday’s confrontation involving the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Benue State, with more than 10 injured youths reportedly receiving treatment at a hospital in Makurdi.

The youths were reportedly taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital after violence broke out when Obi’s convoy was allegedly stopped along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway.

Obi had been travelling to Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, to visit communities affected by the June 13, 2025 terrorist attack when the incident occurred.

A hospital official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that more than 10 injured people had been admitted for treatment.

The official, however, stressed that hospital authorities could not confirm whether the patients were connected to the confrontation involving Obi’s convoy.

According to the official, the patients were described as accident victims, were responding to treatment and no death had been recorded among those receiving care at the facility.

Attempts to obtain a further official response from BSUTH Chief Medical Director, Dr Stephen Hwande, were unsuccessful at the time of the report.

Despite the hospital account, NDC’s Benue State publicity secretary, Agile-Bem Jabez Ordedoo, claimed that one of the youths allegedly involved in the attack had died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Ordedoo alleged that the youths had been sponsored to attack the NDC presidential and governorship candidates.

The death claim had not been independently confirmed by the hospital official cited in the report.

Following the convoy incident, Obi accused a Special Assistant to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Youths of allegedly organising the youths who blocked his movement.

The allegation remains a claim by Obi and has not been independently established in the information provided.

The incident is likely to attract further political attention as the 2027 election campaign period intensifies, particularly amid growing tensions between rival political camps.

Authorities are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the blockade, the reported injuries and the conflicting claim regarding a death.
