For every athlete, a medal holds much more than just its material—it symbolizes years of sacrifice, intense training, and the aspirations of an entire nation. Team Nigeria found the perfect platform at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, to highlight the country’s exceptional sporting talent and indomitable spirit.

After ten days of intense competition, Nigeria delivered one of its best performances in the history of the Commonwealth Games, securing a seventh-place finish overall on the medals table and emerging as Africa’s top-ranked nation.

The Nigerian team returned home with 24 medals—10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze—contributing to nearly half of the 22 gold medals won by African countries at the Games.

Record-Breaking Performances

Nigeria’s campaign was marked by several historic achievements, with athletes shattering Games records, national records, and personal bests.

Weightlifter Folashade Lawal Rafiatu was a standout, setting new Commonwealth and Games records in the women’s 58kg event. She secured the gold medal with dominant performances in both the Snatch, lifting 103kg, and the Clean & Jerk.

On the athletics track, Ezekiel Nathaniel made history as the first Nigerian to win the men’s 400m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games, delivering a memorable gold-medal performance.

Nigeria’s triumph continued with Samuel Ogazi’s victory in the men’s 400m, where he set a new Games record with a remarkable time of 44.25 seconds.

In field events, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi earned Nigeria’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put. Meanwhile, Temitope Adeshina secured bronze in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.90 meters, marking Nigeria’s first medal in this event since Samuel Igun’s silver at the 1966 Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Rewarding Excellence

The team’s exceptional performance was further enhanced by the National Sports Commission (NSC), which promised immediate financial rewards for medal-winning athletes.

Led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, the commission delivered on the Federal Government’s promise by awarding cash prizes soon after each podium finish. Gold medallists received $10,000, silver medallists earned $5,000, and bronze winners took home $3,000. Athletes breaking Games records were also awarded an additional $5,000 performance bonus.

The NSC praised the athletes for their dedication and also acknowledged the invaluable effort of coaches, medical professionals, technical officials, sports federations, support staff, partners, and fans who contributed to Nigeria’s success.

Presidential Commendation

Nigeria’s exceptional performance garnered praise from President Bola Tinubu, who commended Team Nigeria for representing the nation with distinction. In a statement issued by his spokesman, the President described the athletes’ achievements as a source of national pride and applauded everyone involved in the team’s success.

President Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, pledging continued investment in athlete development programs, state-of-the-art training facilities, sporting institutions, and talent discovery initiatives.

A Legacy Beyond Medals

As Glasgow 2026 concludes, Team Nigeria departs with more than just medals and records. The impressive 24-medal haul is a testament to what Nigerian athletes can achieve when talent is coupled with proper support, preparation, and belief.

For millions of Nigerians both at home and abroad, Glasgow 2026 will be remembered not only for the medals won but as a defining chapter in the nation’s sports history—one that showcased the enduring strength, resilience, and limitless potential of Nigerian athletes.
