The National Assembly is developing new ways of making legislative information more accessible to Nigerians, including plans to translate laws into Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and other indigenous languages.

Henry Nwawuba, Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, announced the initiative in Abuja on Monday during the opening of the 2026 National Assembly Library Week.

The annual event, which runs for three days, is themed “Parliamentary Memory: Connecting Records, Legislation and the People.”

Nwawuba said the programme was designed to encourage legislative research, improve access to parliamentary information and promote greater use of the resources available at the National Assembly Library.

He said the library plays an important role in preserving institutional knowledge and parliamentary records, describing it as the legislature’s “knowledge infrastructure” and a repository of its records.

As part of its efforts to modernise access to legislative information, Nwawuba said the National Assembly Library Trust Fund was investing in electronic repositories and upgrading its existing e-library.

The institution is also working on a mobile application that would provide easier access to legislative materials for lawmakers, their aides, researchers, members of staff and the wider public.

The materials being made available include Order Papers, Votes and Proceedings, committee reports and Acts enacted by the National Assembly.

Nwawuba said the planned translation of laws into Nigeria’s major indigenous languages would further support the effort to bring legislative information closer to the public.

The initiative is expected to make legal and parliamentary materials easier to access for Nigerians who are more comfortable receiving information in local languages.

The digitisation programme also reflects the National Assembly Library’s broader effort to preserve parliamentary records while making them available through modern electronic platforms.

The 2026 Library Week provides an opportunity for lawmakers, researchers, library professionals and other stakeholders to discuss how parliamentary records can be preserved and used more effectively.
