A federal court in the United States has blocked a policy that was implemented by President Donald Trump, which halted the processing of immigrant visas for Nigerian citizens and nationals from 74 other countries.

On Friday, Judge Jeannette Vargas of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York issued this ruling.

Court Declares Policy Exceeded Government Authority

The court found that the policy, which the US Department of State introduced in January, was unlawful and exceeded the authority given to Secretary of State Marco Rubio under federal immigration law.

The policy had stopped the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries, affecting individuals planning to move permanently to the United States.

The Trump administration defended the measure by expressing concerns that applicants from the affected countries might become reliant on public assistance once in the United States.

Nigeria Among Impacted African Nations

Nigeria was one of the African nations affected by this visa suspension.

Other impacted African countries included:

– Ghana
– Cameroon
– The Gambia
– Liberia
– Sierra Leone
– Senegal
– Uganda
– Tanzania
– Ethiopia
– Kenya
– Rwanda
– Somalia
– Sudan
– South Sudan
– Egypt
– Morocco
– Algeria
– Côte d’Ivoire
– Togo
– Tunisia

Additionally, the list covered countries from Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Relief for Visa Applicants

The court’s decision marks a significant development for Nigerians and other nationals who were unable to receive immigrant visas due to this suspended policy.

This ruling questions the legal grounds of the visa restriction and could potentially reopen the application process for affected individuals, pending any further legal action or appeals by the US government.
