Former Nigerian First Lady, Patience Jonathan, recently commented on the achievements of Dr. Azibapu Eruani, President of the Azikel Group. She referred to him as a “small boy” whom she mentored, now ranking among Nigeria’s leading businessmen. Her encouragement significantly influenced Eruani’s entry into the business world at a young age.
Her remarks came during an inspection of the Azikel Refinery in Obunagha, Bayelsa State, which was documented in a video that gained traction online. Patience Jonathan mentioned introducing Eruani to notable billionaires, Aliko Dangote and Aminu Dantata, encouraging him to reach their heights.
She recounted guiding Eruani to follow successful businessmen like Dangote and Dantata and motivating him with practical advice. She recalled his ambitious dreams of matching Dangote’s success and expressed her prayers for his aspirations to come true.
Despite initial setbacks during Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in securing a refinery license for Eruani, persistence paid off with approval for three refineries. This significant development marks a milestone for the $1 billion Azikel Refinery project.
The refinery, with a 25,000 barrels-per-day capacity, is set to become Nigeria’s second-largest full-slate refinery and the first privately owned major facility in the Niger Delta. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission, praised Eruani’s perseverance and recognized the project’s positive impact on local employment and economic growth.
The Bayelsa State Government has shown unwavering support, particularly improving roads to the refinery site. Governor Douye Diri, represented by Deputy Governor Peter Akpe, emphasized the project’s potential for industrial transformation and job creation.
Notable attendees at the event included traditional rulers, government officials, and representatives of the Azikel Group, all recognizing the refinery’s role in advancing regional development.
